HOW ARE CELLULITE FORMED?
Almost, if not all, friends, or someone that you know, regardless of age, physical shape, size , or ethnicity struggle with cellulite.
Why do women have more tendency for cellulite compared to men?
The answer lies in that women have 34% less collagen fibres and 57% larger fat cells in deeper layer of the skin. The combination of larger fat cells pushing upwards and less collagen anchors gives the dimpling appearance of cellulite.
Cellulite forms when fibrous bands called septae, which connect the skin to the underlying muscle fascia, tighten irregularly, pulling down on the skin, and/or begin to break down, allowing the normal layer of fat beneath the skin to push upward. This results in the puckering or “cottage cheese” appearance.
Septae is closely attached to upper skin, giving it support. However, in cellulite formation, septae are being stretched by fat cells, hence it’s tightly pulling downwards the upper skin creating the dimples in skin.
So it is not toxin accumulation as some claim, it’s a myth to say at least, hence why detox diet, lymphatic massage and body wraps just don’t work in long run, it only works temporarily to reduce water retention.
Cellulite also worsens with age as we lose more collagen and skin becomes thinner, pushing the fat pockets more and having lax skin is definitely not helping the appearance of orange peel.
Even though overweight women tend to have more prominent cellulite, it is common even in very thin women, and losing weight alone doesn’t help much with cellulite appearance.
We use a variety of treatments to help patients reduce cellulite. While none are permanent, many can achieve results that last years or longer with proper care.
